The websites of German airports, public\u00a0administration bodies and financial sector organizations have been hit by\u00a0cyberattacks instigated by a Russian \u201chacker group\u201d, authorities said Thursday.<\/p>\n
The Federal Cyber Security Authority (BSI) had \u201cknowledge of DDoS attacks against targets in Germany\u201d, a spokesman told\u00a0AFP.<\/p>\n
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is designed to overwhelm the target with a flood of internet traffic, preventing the system from functioning normally.<\/p>\n
The attacks were aimed \u201cin particular at the websites of airports\u201d, as well\u00a0as some \u201ctargets in the financial sector\u201d and \u201cthe websites of federal and\u00a0state administrations\u201d, the spokesman said.<\/p>\n
The attack had been \u201cannounced by the Russian hacker group Killnet\u201d, the\u00a0
BSI spokesman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The group\u2019s call to arms was in response to Chancellor Olaf Scholz\u2019s announcement Wednesday that Germany would send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine to help repel the Russian invasion, according to financial daily Handelsblatt.<\/p>\n
Attributing Thursday\u2019s attacks directly to the hacker group, however, was \u201cparticularly hard\u201d, the BSI spokesman said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey call for action and then a lot of people take part,\u201d he said. The attacks made \u201csome websites unavailable\u201d, the BSI said, without there being \u201cany indication of direct impacts on (the organisations\u2019) services\u201d.<\/p>\n
Attacks on public administrations were \u201clargely repelled with no serious\u00a0
impacts\u201d, the BSI said.<\/p>\n
The interior ministry for southwestern Baden-Wuerttemberg state acknowledged \u201cnationwide\u201d DDoS attacks since Wednesday evening against websites, including those of public administration and the regional police.<\/p>\n
Germany is on high alert for cyberattacks in the wake of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
The Federal Office for Information Security said in October that the threat level for hacking attacks and other cybercrime activities was higher \u201cthan\u00a0ever\u201d.<\/p>\n
