{"id":16792,"date":"2023-01-31T17:32:14","date_gmt":"2023-01-31T16:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.show.it\/microsofts-verified-publisher-status-abused-in-email-theft-campaign\/"},"modified":"2023-01-31T17:32:14","modified_gmt":"2023-01-31T16:32:14","slug":"microsofts-verified-publisher-status-abused-in-email-theft-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.show.it\/en\/microsofts-verified-publisher-status-abused-in-email-theft-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft\u2019s Verified Publisher Status Abused in Email Theft Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Microsoft and cybersecurity firm Proofpoint on Tuesday warned organizations that use cloud services about a recent campaign that involved malicious OAuth applications and abuse of Microsoft\u2019s \u2018verified publisher\u2019 status.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The campaign mainly targeted Microsoft customers in Ireland and the UK. The tech giant has taken steps to disrupt the operation and it has published an article on <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/active-directory\/manage-apps\/protect-against-consent-phishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how users can protect against<\/a> these threats, which the company calls \u2018consent phishing\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In a consent phishing attack, a threat actor attempts to trick a targeted user into granting permissions to their malicious cloud applications. Once they have obtained the required permissions, the malicious apps can gain access to legitimate cloud services and user data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a campaign uncovered by Proofpoint in December 2022, hackers created malicious OAuth apps and then<a href=\"https:\/\/www.proofpoint.com\/us\/blog\/cloud-security\/dangerous-consequences-threat-actors-abusing-microsofts-verified-publisher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> obtained a \u2018verified publisher\u2019 status<\/a> in an effort to increase their chances of tricking users.<\/p>\n<p>According to Microsoft, the attackers impersonated legitimate companies when enrolling in the Microsoft Cloud Partner Program (MCPP).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe actor used fraudulent partner accounts to add a verified publisher to OAuth app registrations they created in Azure AD,\u201d Microsoft explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This made it more likely for targeted users to grant permissions to the malicious applications. These permissions included reading emails, changing email settings, and accessing files and other user data, such as calendar and meeting information.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"417\" height=\"518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Microsoft_verified_publisher_abuse.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Microsoft_verified_publisher_abuse.png 417w, https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Microsoft_verified_publisher_abuse-290x360.png 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/msrc-blog.microsoft.com\/2023\/01\/31\/threat-actor-consent-phishing-campaign-abusing-the-verified-publisher-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft\u2019s investigation<\/a> showed that the attackers used the malicious OAuth applications to exfiltrate emails.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Proofpoint, the attackers used three malicious apps created by three different publishers. They all used the same malicious infrastructure and targeted the same organizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe potential impact to organizations includes compromised user accounts, data exfiltration, brand abuse of impersonated organizations, business email compromise (BEC) fraud, and mailbox abuse,\u201d Proofpoint said. \u201cThe attack was less likely to be detected than traditional targeted phishing or brute force attacks. Organizations typically have weaker defense-in-depth controls against threat actors using verified OAuth apps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Proofpoint, the campaign ran until December 27. The security firm observed attacks against financial and marketing staff, as well as executives and managers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft said it became aware of the campaign on December 15.
